Overexpression of jojoba wax ester synthase in poplar increases foliar lipid accumulation, alters stomatal conductance, and increases water use efficiency
杨树是重要的速生、耗水生物量乔木作物。本研究通过对荷荷巴蜡酯合成酶(ScWS)的过表达,瞄准了白杨(Populus x canescens)蜡合成途径产生脂质。我们发现,ScWS过表达引起叶片细胞脂滴的积累,但并未增加叶片表面的蜡质负荷。然而,气孔中封闭或半封闭的保护细胞比例较高,脂质积累异常。在表达scws的杨树中,这种表型伴随着气孔气孔1 (OSP1)的抑制和气孔导度的降低。在温室和室外条件下的短期和长期干旱情景下,ScWS品系提高了水分利用效率,导致节水表型和延迟干旱胁迫。高光照条件下华南杨树光合作用降低,低光照条件下不降低。在短期试验中,ScWS系的生物量产量未受影响,但在两个大田季节结束时,其产量低于野生型杨树,表明存在长期生长权衡。我们的结果为在更节水的杨树中生产脂质开辟了新的机会。
