Abstract
Considering digital economy (DE) as a driving force for high-quality development, it is important to clarify its impact on industrial carbon emission efficiency (ICEE). The study investigates the impact mechanism, nonlinear effect, spatial spillover effect and spatial threshold effect of the DE on ICEE by using panel data of 284 cities in China from 2011 to 2021. The results show that: (1) DE exhibits a nonlinear impact on ICEE. When DE exceeds 0.3414, the impact turns from negative to positive. (2) There exists a significant spatial threshold effect of DE on ICEE. (3) DE affects ICEE through scale effect, technological effect and structural effect. There are also threshold effects on the mechanisms by which DE affects ICEE. Additionally, under different development levels of the three mechanisms, the impact of DE on ICEE also exhibits variations. This study provides inspiration for fully unleashing the carbon reduction dividend of DE and forming a joint force of urban industrial emission reduction.

The Journal of Cleaner Production is an international, transdisciplinary journal that addresses and discusses theoretical and practical Cleaner Production, Environmental, and Sustainability issues. It aims to help societies become more sustainable by focusing on the concept of 'Cleaner Production', which aims at preventing waste production and increasing efficiencies in energy, water, resources, and human capital use. The journal serves as a platform for corporations, governments, education institutions, regions, and societies to engage in discussions and research related to Cleaner Production, environmental, and sustainability practices.
