Ryan and Deci (2000b) were careful to point out that extrinsic motivation also consists of different “styles” and was not a unitary phenomenon. Ryan et al. (2009) were careful to call this a “differentiated taxonomy of the varied types of regulations underlying extrinsic motivations, each of which has unique characteristics” (p. 111).
