Abstract

Background: Salmonellosis is a common bacterial disease that usually runs a benign course and most patients recover without specific treatment. However, some develop extra-intestinal complications which can have long-term cardiac implications.

Case summary: A 46-year-old man with known ischaemic heart disease presented with fever. The case which was thought to be a viral infection soon developed myocardial infarction, pericardial effusion, and subsequent constrictive pericarditis as a result of salmonellosis. He recovered after targeted antibiotics, repeated pericardial drainage, and surgical interventions.
