Introduction

L’imagerie opportuniste (IO) correspond à l’action volontaire d’extraire un biomarqueur de phénotype de risque, indépendamment de l’indication initiale de l’examen. Bien que le développement d’algorithmes d’IO soit encore principalement du champ de la recherche, le domaine évolue très vite, et il est important de poser dès maintenant le cadre de la réflexion sur son développement et son utilisation.

Cet article propose une réflexion d’ordre éthique, c’est-à-dire, une démarche ouverte et non prescriptive, soulignant quelques points de vigilance concernant l’IO, qui paraissent essentiels à s’approprier.

Comprendre rapidement les enjeux du développement de l’IO devrait permettre d’anticiper activement la participation en temps réel des radiologues lors du développement des algorithmes, etdans les discussions concernant la mise en place de dépistages populationnels.

Introduction

Opportunistic imaging (OI) corresponds to the voluntary action of extracting a risk phenotype biomarker, independently of the initial indication for the examination. Although the development of OI algorithms is still mainly in the field of research, the domain is evolving very rapidly, and it is important to set the framework now for thinking about its development and use.

Main messages

This article proposes an ethical discussion, i.e., an open and non-prescriptive approach, highlighting a number of points of vigilance concerning OI, which we feel are essential to grasp.

Conclusion

An early understanding of the issues involved in the development of OI should enable radiologists to play an active role in the development of algorithms and in discussions concerning the implementation of population-based screening.
