Abstract
Aim
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of esketamine on perioperative anxiety and depressive symptoms, acute stress reaction, and serum neurotransmitters in patients undergoing total hysterectomy.
Methods
Clinical data of 120 patients undergoing total hysterectomy from May 2020 to June 2021 were retrospectively analyzed and divided into group C (3 mL of saline administered intravenously 10 min before surgical excision, 65 patients) or group K (0.5 mg/kg of esketamine administered intravenously 10 min before surgical excision, 55 patients).
Results
Acute stress reaction, depression, and anxiety; and myeloperoxidase levels were lower while serum dopamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, neuropeptide, as well as brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels were higher in group K than those in group C at 12 h postoperatively (p < 0.05). Additionally, analgesic effect and postoperative fatigue at 3 h and 12 h postoperatively were lower in group K than those in group C (p < 0.05). The incidence of adverse reactions in group K (14.55%) did not differ significantly from group C (4.62%) (p > 0.05).
Conclusions
In summary, as a preventive measure for patients undergoing total hysterectomy, esketamine can reduce perioperative anxiety and depression, result in good analgesic and sedative effects without significantly increasing adverse effects.
