Abstract
In this research, sapphire/Kovar sandwich joints were brazed using Ag–Cu-Ti alloy at 850 °C for 10, 20, and 30 min, and the microstructure evolution and interface reaction were investigated. Several brazing processes were carried out in a high vacuum furnace in order to investigate the effects of holding time on the joint interface and mechanical properties. SEM and EDS analyses were conducted for the joint microstructure and interface composition analysis. The results show that Ti element in brazing filler metal forms intermetallic compounds with Fe and Ni during the brazing process. The prolonging of holding time improves the dissolution amount of elements Fe and Ni dissolved in the brazing seam on the Kovar metal side. The maximal tensile strength of 105 MPa was achieved for the joints brazed at 850 °C for 20 min.
