Abstract

Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) is highly expressed in activated fibroblasts by tumor stroma, tumor cells of sarcomas, and granulation tissues, especially in cancers of epithelial origin. However, it is lowly expressed or even not expressed in normal cells. Fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAP inhibitor, FAPI) has a high affinity and specificity for FAP, and significant advances in FAP in nuclear medicine since 2018 have been facilitated by the application of nuclide-labeled FAPI for clinical tumor imaging. FAPI imaging is gradually becoming an important imaging agent in the diagnosis of oncological diseases, and this review summarizes the existing literature on FAPI PET/CT imaging for the diagnosis of various malignant diseases.
