Abstract
In the present work, dense and tough alumina toughened zirconia (ATZ) composites reinforced with strontium hexaluminate platelets (S6A) were developed by Direct Ink Writing. To avoid the issues related with the direct addition of high aspect ratio particles, the S6A platelets were grown in situ during the sintering step. The influence of the S6A precursor addition on the printability of the ATZ paste and subsequently on the densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of the printed parts were studied. Proper printability was attained for pastes with 40 vol% of solids in the presence of different amounts of S6A precursors. Good dispersibility of the S6A platelets was observed in the sintered microstructures, for all considered concentrations (2.5, 5 and 7.5 vol%). Samples reinforced with S6A platelets exhibited densities around 98–99 %, while the best trade-off between flexural strength (768 MPa), fracture toughness (8.5 MPa√m) and hardness (14.3 GPa) was attained for the ATZ containing 5 vol% of S6A.
期刊介绍:
Composites Part A: Applied Science and Manufacturing is a comprehensive journal that publishes original research papers, review articles, case studies, short communications, and letters covering various aspects of composite materials science and technology. This includes fibrous and particulate reinforcements in polymeric, metallic, and ceramic matrices, as well as 'natural' composites like wood and biological materials. The journal addresses topics such as properties, design, and manufacture of reinforcing fibers and particles, novel architectures and concepts, multifunctional composites, advancements in fabrication and processing, manufacturing science, process modeling, experimental mechanics, microstructural characterization, interfaces, prediction and measurement of mechanical, physical, and chemical behavior, and performance in service. Additionally, articles on economic and commercial aspects, design, and case studies are welcomed. All submissions undergo rigorous peer review to ensure they contribute significantly and innovatively, maintaining high standards for content and presentation. The editorial team aims to expedite the review process for prompt publication.
