The reaction mechanism was studied by labeling experiments, LC-MS/NMR monitoring, and intermediates trapping. The reaction features and limitations were highlighted, and focusing on the side processes allowed the demonstration of examples of gaining high molecular complexity from simple reactants. Abstract
