Abstract
Global cities are facing unprecedented traffic congestion challenges that could be solved by travel demand management (TDM) measures. Carpooling is one of these measures to lessen road traffic congestion by reducing the use of single-occupancy vehicles. A questionnaire (n = 150) was conducted in eight suburban towns in Islamabad, Pakistan, to understand commuters' perspectives towards carpooling, considering carpooling clubs, monetary incentives, and digital apps. The analysis shows that 58 % of commuters were interested in carpooling if their clubs can improve their trust in other ride-mates. Also, carpooling clubs can reduce travel costs without delaying travel times and distances. Ordered logistic regression analysis revealed that education level, monthly income, car driving, Facebook and WhatsApp groups, online websites, and club mobility applications are significant predictors of travelers' Carpooling interests when considering dedicated carpooling clubs. Prior knowledge of carpooling, marital status, education level, present travel mode, and carpooling Facebook group variables are significant predictors of carpooling interests with clubs and incentives. Additionally, commuters perceive carpooling club WhatsApp groups as easy and practical to access carpooling; however, mobile applications can better secure their privacy and make ride-matching convenient. Lastly, the relationships between total travel costs and the number of carpooling people were analyzed using the innovative sustainable carpool club model and Hotelling's line. These findings provide insights into the importance of carpooling clubs and digital apps for promoting carpooling as a sustainable and low-budget travel alternative in the community.
