Abstract
In a Polish community sample (N = 789; 46.6 % men; Mage = 46.63; SDage = 15.93), we examined the relationships between different forms of grandiose narcissism (i.e., sanctity, heroism, admiration, rivalry), personal values, attitudes, and behavioral intentions toward war and peace. We found that: (1) grandiose narcissism (excluding sanctity) was associated with stronger pro-war attitudes and intentions; (2) admiration and rivalry were negatively related, while sanctity was positively related to attitudes toward peace; (3) rivalry and heroism were negatively related to pro-peace intentions, whereas admiration was unrelated, and sanctity was positively related. Moreover, we found that Schwartz's values of self-transcendence, openness to change, and conservation mediated the relationship between narcissism and acceptance of war and peace. Our studies points to the importance of narcissistic self-enhancement and self-protection in shaping views on intergroup relations.
期刊介绍:
Personality and Individual Differences is devoted to the publication of articles (experimental, theoretical, review) which aim to integrate as far as possible the major factors of personality with empirical paradigms from experimental, physiological, animal, clinical, educational, criminological or industrial psychology or to seek an explanation for the causes and major determinants of individual differences in concepts derived from these disciplines. The editors are concerned with both genetic and environmental causes, and they are particularly interested in possible interaction effects.
