Abstract
We present a systematic literature review to identify key factors influencing the design and construction of bamboo buildings. Grounded in Knowledge Management theory’s distinction between explicit and tacit knowledge and integrated with Diffusion of Innovations theory, we examine literature published between 1 January 2013 and 31 July 2024 in the Scopus database, yielding 59 relevant articles. Seventeen influencing factors were identified and categorised into five dimensions: explicit knowledge, tacit knowledge, technology and design innovation, economic and market factors and socio-cultural factors. By analysing the interrelationships among these factors, we develop a comprehensive conceptual framework. Within this framework, explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge form the foundation for technological and design innovation, which in turn enhances the knowledge base and drives industry advancement. Economic and market factors influence investment in and returns from technological innovation, while socio-cultural perceptions shape market acceptance. These findings provide a systematic understanding of the factors affecting bamboo building design and construction, supporting the promotion of bamboo as a sustainable construction material and serving as a valuable reference for future research.
