Abstract
Introduction: The National Task Force on Nurse Practitioner Quality Education recommends nurse practitioner students meet national competencies before beginning clinical experiences in their nurse practitioner program. This initiative aimed to create a preclinical preparatory program for pediatric nurse practitioner students to boost clinical confidence and document competency achievement.
Method: Using a backward design, coursework, and simulations were developed for students to master preclinical competencies. At semester's end, students underwent a summative assessment simulating pediatric primary care scenarios aimed at documenting competency mastery.
Results: Students reported increased confidence and preparedness for clinical settings.
Discussion: This qualty improvement preparatory program sets students up for success in their first clinical rotation. Further work is planned to link this semester's outcomes with nurse practitioner student clinical performance.
