Abstract

Osteomyelitis is an infection or inflammation of the bone. Infection of an intact bone is very rare, and osteomyelitis most often follows a fracture or surgery. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common organism implicated in cases of osteomyelitis. Enterococcus species are being increasingly reported worldwide for causing nosocomial and community-acquired infections. Despite a few reports of osteomyelitis by Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, osteomyelitis by Enterococcus avium is rarely reported in the literature. We hereby present a case of a 68-year-old male who presented with chronic osteomyelitis of the right tibia caused by Enterococcus avium with a successful outcome.
