Groups were more competitive than individuals and the magnitude of this discontinuity effect did not vary significantly between equal- and unequal-power settings. Further, regardless of whether the interaction was between individuals or groups, unequal (compared to equal) power conduced to competition. Finally, this greater competitiveness in unequal-power settings was due to the high-power players. In 2016, papers were triaged within less than a week, and the average turnaround time from receipt of the manuscript to first decision sent back to the authors was 47 days.
