Improved international legislation, including a plan of action put forward by the International Maritime Organization, shoreside power supply, alternative fuels, and other green technologies are major propellers to new port design changes. The paper calls for cooperation from all stakeholders, applies holistic methods of valuation through data envelopment analysis and life cycle assessment, and discusses integration with smart technologies.
