Abstract

Previous studies have demonstrated that eosinophilic ulcer of the oral mucosa represents a subset of CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorder, with subsequent authors suggesting that several of them are reminiscent of lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) of the skin. Microscopically, diffused infiltration by small-to-large-sized atypical lymphoid cells, frequently expressing CD30, is characteristic of LyP, which encompasses a clinicopathological spectrum including type A, B, C, D, E, and LyP with DUSP22/IRF4 rearrangement. To date, approximately 27 intraoral LyP cases have been reported. Of them, 7 cases were diagnosed as LyP type C, frequently confused with anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). A 60-year-old male was referred with a symptomatic ulcer in the tongue 1 month ago. After incisional biopsy, microscopy showed numerous atypical large cells suspicious of ALCL, which were immunopositively for CD3, CD4, CD30, and TIA-1. Ki-67 stained the largest cells. EBER was negative. CD56 and ALK were negative. After 3 weeks, the lesion completely healed.

期刊介绍: Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology is required reading for anyone in the fields of oral surgery, oral medicine, oral pathology, oral radiology or advanced general practice dentistry. It is the only major dental journal that provides a practical and complete overview of the medical and surgical techniques of dental practice in four areas. Topics covered include such current issues as dental implants, treatment of HIV-infected patients, and evaluation and treatment of TMJ disorders. The official publication for nine societies, the Journal is recommended for initial purchase in the Brandon Hill study, Selected List of Books and Journals for the Small Medical Library.
