Abstract
Shigella are Gram-negative non motile facultative anaerobic bacteria belonging to family Enterobacterales. They are a leading cause of diarrhoea and dysentery and constitute a significant public health problem in both the developing and developed nations. In Asia alone, 125 million infections and 14,000 deaths are estimated to be due to shigellosis annually. Bacteremia caused by Shigella spp is rare. We hereby present a case of bloodstream infection caused by fluoroquinolone resistant, extended spectrum beta lactamase producing Shigella flexneri strain in a five-year-old malnourished child that was successfully managed using meropenem and supportive treatment.
