Abstract

Background

Policymakers are interested in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) to meet mental health care needs. Little is known about their numbers, characteristics and preparation for practice.

Methods

We obtained data from the public use 2022 National Sample Surveys of Registered Nurses to describe PMHNP characteristics. Regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between the key outcome variable of interest, preparation for practice, and other covariates.

Results

The number of PMHNPs practicing in the US is increasing rapidly. PMHNPs are more likely to be older in age, doctorally prepared, and have completed post-graduate education when compared to FNP and PNP counterparts. Doctorally prepared PMHNPs report high levels of perceived preparation for practice.

Conclusion

PMHNPs are poised to fill mental healthcare needs across the U.S. They are entering into practice with more nursing experience and educational preparation then other primary care nurse practitioners.
