Abstract
Background
Political advocacy skills are essential for healthcare professions, including nursing, to decrease social and health disparities and advocate for professional practice.
Methods
The mock legislative hearing remote simulation (MLHRS) was part of a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) policy course and incorporated the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice™. Faculty facilitated the simulation synchronously via video conference, and each student presented a prepared oral testimony to the mock hearing committee. After all testimony, students voted on the issue. Small and large group debriefing followed the hearing.
Results
Students found the MLHRS experience effective in understanding the legislative hearing process. Students learned to analyze a policy critically and practiced the power of influence through testimony during the MLHRS.
Conclusion
The MLHRS effectively engaged graduate students in the practice of policy analysis and professional communication skills focused on the power of influence while considering the principles of social justice.

Clinical Simulation in Nursing is an international, peer reviewed journal published online monthly. Clinical Simulation in Nursing is the official journal of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation & Learning (INACSL) and reflects its mission to advance the science of healthcare simulation.
We will review and accept articles from other health provider disciplines, if they are determined to be of interest to our readership. The journal accepts manuscripts meeting one or more of the following criteria:
Research articles and literature reviews (e.g. systematic, scoping, umbrella, integrative, etc.) about simulation
Innovative teaching/learning strategies using simulation
Articles updating guidelines, regulations, and legislative policies that impact simulation
Leadership for simulation
Simulation operations
Clinical and academic uses of simulation.
