Abstract

Reconstruction of facial paralysis requires the restoration of both functional and aesthetic aspects while considering a satisfactory quality of life. The periorbital region in particular poses major challenges. The main symptoms of the periorbital region include increased tearing, lagophthalmos, recurrent keratoconjunctivitis, asymmetry and inability to blink spontaneously. Diagnostics as well as therapy must be carried out in an interdisciplinary setting. Conservative treatment is initiated immediately after occurrence of symptoms. The indication for surgical therapy depends on the etiology, severity and regenerative capacity of the paresis. If there are no signs of improvement, the function of the facial nerve can be restored surgically. Surgical reconstruction options include dynamic and static procedures. While the goal of static treatment is to protect the cornea and improve symmetry, dynamic procedures also aim to restore spontaneous motor skills and facial expressions. This article summarizes the range and timing of treatment options for the periorbital region.
