Abstract
Objectives: Plasmacytoma is a malignant neoplasm of plasma cells with or without an underlying multiple myeloma (MM). Plasmacytoma rarely involves the oral mucosa and jaw bones. We aimed to describe oral plasmacytoma in MM patients.
Study design: Patients with oral plasmacytoma seen at the Oral Medicine clinic from 2007 to 2024 were included in this study.
Results: There were 18 patients (26 oral plasmacytomas). The median age was 60.5 years (72.3% females). The most common symptoms were pain and bleeding. Ten patients had gnathic involvement, and 8 patients had soft tissue disease without bony involvement. The gingiva was the most common site (50.0%) and buccolingual involvement was seen in 38.5% of cases. Treatment directed at the oral disease was rendered in 11 patients. Over 90% of patients died with a median of 5 months.
Conclusions: MM patients may present with oral involvement most commonly on the gingiva with frequent buccal and lingual involvement.

Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology is required reading for anyone in the fields of oral surgery, oral medicine, oral pathology, oral radiology or advanced general practice dentistry. It is the only major dental journal that provides a practical and complete overview of the medical and surgical techniques of dental practice in four areas. Topics covered include such current issues as dental implants, treatment of HIV-infected patients, and evaluation and treatment of TMJ disorders. The official publication for nine societies, the Journal is recommended for initial purchase in the Brandon Hill study, Selected List of Books and Journals for the Small Medical Library.
