Abstract

The circular economy (CE) aims to reshape production models, aligning them with environmental and social goals. Recent analyses show that global economic systems in 2023 are recycling only 7.3% of their material usage. One reason is the existence of barriers to CE adoption at multiple levels, which in turn require appropriate dynamic capabilities to be overcome. This research explores the connections between barriers and dynamic capabilities, with a focus on their microfoundations, with the aim to develop a comprehensive framework supporting firms to implement CE business models. The study employs a multiple case study on seven Italian companies that successfully undergone the circular transformation across diverse manufacturing industries belonging to Made in Italy, that is, fashion, food, furniture, and paper. The research outlines seven microfoundations linked to the three dynamic capabilities of sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring. These microfoundations allow firms to overcome barriers at the institutional, supply chain, and firm levels.

Business Strategy and the Environment (BSE) is a leading academic journal focused on business strategies for improving the natural environment. It publishes peer-reviewed research on various topics such as systems and standards, environmental performance, disclosure, eco-innovation, corporate environmental management tools, organizations and management, supply chains, circular economy, governance, green finance, industry sectors, and responses to climate change and other contemporary environmental issues. The journal aims to provide original contributions that enhance the understanding of sustainability in business. Its target audience includes academics, practitioners, business managers, and consultants. However, BSE does not accept papers on corporate social responsibility (CSR), as this topic is covered by its sibling journal Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. The journal is indexed in several databases and collections such as ABI/INFORM Collection, Agricultural & Environmental Science Database, BIOBASE, Emerald Management Reviews, GeoArchive, Environment Index, GEOBASE, INSPEC, Technology Collection, and Web of Science.
