Abstract

The Perth Basin is characterized by the interplay of diverse tectonic events, predominantly extensional, and represents a significant area for hydrocarbon exploration and geothermal potential in Australia. This study aims to elucidate the structural configuration and distribution of the basement in the northern segment of the basin through the comprehensive integration of gravity, magnetic, and seismic data. The final model delineates a transverse zone located to the north of the study area, exhibiting sinistral shear that induces notable alterations in the trend of adjacent faults, further influencing the emplacement of bodies with enhanced magnetic susceptibility. Additionally, this tectonic configuration holds considerable implications for both hydrocarbon migration and the facilitation of geothermal fluid flow, as evidenced by the geothermal gradient maps pertinent to the study area. The findings underscore the pivotal role of transfer zones in shaping the configuration of intrusive bodies and in the geological evolution of the Perth Basin. It is posited that pre-existing anisotropy from the initial phases of extension has been reactivated, thereby modifying the trajectories of structures that govern sedimentation processes and the migration of various fluid types, including hydrocarbons and geothermal fluids.

Geothermics is an international journal devoted to the research and development of geothermal energy. The International Board of Editors of Geothermics, which comprises specialists in the various aspects of geothermal resources, exploration and development, guarantees the balanced, comprehensive view of scientific and technological developments in this promising energy field. It promulgates the state of the art and science of geothermal energy, its exploration and exploitation through a regular exchange of information from all parts of the world. The journal publishes articles dealing with the theory, exploration techniques and all aspects of the utilization of geothermal resources. Geothermics serves as the scientific house, or exchange medium, through which the growing community of geothermal specialists can provide and receive information.
