Abstract
Objectives
In France, a number of guidelines provided by specialist medical societies supervises home parenteral nutrition, with the exception of the practice of supplementing mixtures. Heterogeneous supplementation practices for industrial parenteral nutrition mixtures at home have been observed across the country. The aim of this project is to provide an initial framework for this specific and high-risk practice carried out in patients’ homes.
Materials and methods
Good practice recommendations for home supplementation have been drawn up, following the methodology described by the French National Authority for Health (“Haute Autorité de Santé”) for drawing up good practice recommendations by formalized consensus, in association with the French-speaking society of clinical nutrition and metabolism (“Société Francophone de Nutrition Clinique et Métabolique”).
Results
Three working groups (pilot, rating, reading) brought together twenty-nine experts from the various professions involved in accredited home parenteral nutrition centers for adult patients. Twenty-six recommendations were drawn up.
Conclusion
This multi-professional project to draw up initial recommendations is part of the objective to harmonize practices and improve the quality and safety of care by improving the nutritional care management of patients at home.
