Association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and developmental disabilities in US children and adolescents: A cross-sectional study from NHANES.

Inclusion criteria required participants to have complete questionnaire responses regarding maternal smoking during pregnancy and receipt of special education or early intervention services. The risk of developmental disabilities was assessed using a multifactor logistic regression model.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>In the cohort of 10111 children and adolescents, 727 (7.2%) received special education or early intervention services. Of these participants, 1504 (14.9%) were exposed to maternal smoking during pregnancy. The prevalence of maternal smoking was higher (12.3%) in the group receiving special education or early intervention compared to those who did not (6.3%). After adjusting for other relevant factors in a multifactorial logistic regression model, maternal smoking during pregnancy was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of requiring special education or early intervention services (adjusted odds ratio, AOR=1.51; 95% CI: 1.24-1.83, p<0.001).</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>This cross-sectional analysis found an association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and the need for special education or early intervention services among US children and adolescents, after adjusting for confounding variables. Preventing diseases attributable to tobacco is only one aspect of the journal, whose overall scope is to provide a forum for the publication of research articles that can contribute to reducing the burden of tobacco induced diseases globally. To address this epidemic we believe that there must be an avenue for the publication of research/policy activities on tobacco control initiatives that may be very important at a regional and national level. This approach provides a very important "hands on" service to the tobacco control community at a global scale - as common problems have common solutions. Hence, we see ourselves as "connectors" within this global community. The journal hence encourages the submission of articles from all medical, biological and psychosocial disciplines, ranging from medical and dental clinicians, through health professionals to basic biomedical and clinical scientists.
