Abstract

Solar thermal energy storage systems are crucial for addressing global renewable energy challenges and promoting sustainable development. Despite significant research and technological advancements in enhancing solar collectors and thermal energy storage efficiency, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis has been lacking. This review analyses 925 STES research articles considering latent heat storage and solar collectors published between 1975 and 2023 in the Web of Science, Scopus, and Dimensions databases using VOSviewer and Microsoft Excel. The study identifies three developmental stages in solar thermal energy storage research. Among the 435 filtered publications, India is the most prolific country, reflecting a growing interest in this field. The review identifies four major research clusters and highlights the most productive studies, organizations, and key literature. Current trends and future directions in STES research are explored, including solar energy storage, heating equipment, energy utilisation, phase change materials, nanofluids, environmental impact, performance assessment, and efficiency improvements. This bibliometric review aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), by promoting innovative solutions for sustainable energy systems and climate resilience. It provides valuable insights for scientists, industrialists, and policymakers to advance their work and develop robust energy policies for security and sustainability.

期刊介绍: The mission of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews is to disseminate the most compelling and pertinent critical insights in renewable and sustainable energy, fostering collaboration among the research community, private sector, and policy and decision makers. The journal aims to exchange challenges, solutions, innovative concepts, and technologies, contributing to sustainable development, the transition to a low-carbon future, and the attainment of emissions targets outlined by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews publishes a diverse range of content, including review papers, original research, case studies, and analyses of new technologies, all featuring a substantial review component such as critique, comparison, or analysis. Introducing a distinctive paper type, Expert Insights, the journal presents commissioned mini-reviews authored by field leaders, addressing topics of significant interest. Case studies undergo consideration only if they showcase the work's applicability to other regions or contribute valuable insights to the broader field of renewable and sustainable energy. Notably, a bibliographic or literature review lacking critical analysis is deemed unsuitable for publication.
