Abstract
Access to targeted radiotherapy (TRT) in oncology has traditionally been viewed as a matter of geographical proximity and treatment acceptability. However, the current state of research in the sociology of health suggests that the main barriers to equitable access are organizational. This article examines how accessibility to TRT depends on the efficient organization of care systems, rather than simply logistical factors such as patients’ distance to treatment centers. In particular, it explores three critical dimensions: the need for well-organized patient referral pathways, the balance between specialization and coordination in care delivery, and the potential role of patient associations as organizers. Using a sociological framework, this study shows that comprehensive organizational strategies are essential to reduce inequalities in access. Thus, equitable accessibility to TRT requires structured, patient-centered care networks and increased involvement of associations in health decision-making.
