Abstract

Ag/AgCl chloride-sensing electrode has been designed to monitor chloride concentrations in reinforced concrete. However, the interface transformation of Ag/AgCl electrode in concrete pore solution is not clarified. In this work, the transformation process of the same Ag/AgCl electrode in cement extract was monitored by EIS and SECM, followed by surface analysis. Dense AgCl film degraded into porous one, but the exposed Ag substrate was activated temporarily by Cl- in 10 min. The Ag substrate without AgCl covered can be easily absorbed by OH-, leading to alterations in the electrode potential during Cl- response.
