Abstract

In this work, a review of the literature is carried out to analyze the influence of ketamine in the approach and control of suicidal ideation, as well as in the impact at the cognitive level, among adult patients (over 20 years of age) diagnosed with major depression. The results show that ketamine has been shown to be an effective strategy in the control of treatment-resistant depression and suicidal ideation, acting acutely in situations of adult patients of all ages with major depression. Although the analysis of the impact on the cognitive functioning of patients has identified deleterious and temporary alterations within the first hours after ketamine administration, in the long term, improvements in the cognitive function of patients are identified. Reduced anxiety, improved mood and better functioning are identified after ketamine treatment. A reduction in suicidal ideation and in the severity of depressive symptomatology is also observed.
