Abstract
The Brazilian coast was occupied through several millennia by shellmound builders who constructed impressive mounds locally named “sambaquis”. They are presently recognized to have had a system of mixed economy, where fishing and gathering were associated with horticulture, and the mounds are demonstrated to have been funerary. Two sites situated in the rear of the Guanabara Bay, near Rio de Janeiro city, were studied: sambaquis Sernambetiba, dated from c. 2000 to 1600 cal yrs BP, and Amourins, dated from c. 4300 to 3800 cal yrs BP. Anthracological analyses were performed according to international protocols. Archaeobotanical ratios (carporemains:charcoal) were estimated for all analyzed samples. The results reiterated previous studies, attesting the sites’ establishment in the coastal restinga environment, but revealed an unusual predominance of mangrove firewood. Additionally, the high proportions of palm nuts verified in both sites suggest a ritual use of palms that has not been recorded heretofore.
