Abstract
Zn-Al-Mg coated steel (ZAM-steel) is increasingly utilized in automotive and construction industries due to favorable corrosion resistance compared to traditional galvanized steel. However, its application is limited by the susceptibility to filiform corrosion (FFC) in harsh environments. Herein, we developed a ternary MgAlCe layered double hydroxide (LDH) intercalated with benzotriazole-5 carboxylic acid (BTC) inhibitor using a one-pot hydrothermal approach. This LDH was incorporated into epoxy (EP) coating in order to inhibit FFC of ZAM-steel. The resulting EP-based nanocomposite coating (EP/MgAlCe BTC LDH) demonstrated remarkable long-term corrosion resistance, maintaining a lowest-frequency impedance (|Z|0.01Hz) of 2.19 × 1010 Ω cm2 even after 120 days of saline exposure. The |Z|0.01Hz value of scratched sample revealed a rising trend over 144 h, indicative of self-healing properties, further corroborated by salt spray test. Specifically, EP/MgAlCe-BTC coating offered superior protection against FFC. No FFC filament was observed after 8 weeks of exposure to a FFC-sensitive environment. The exceptional protective performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of inorganic inhibitor (cerium hydroxide) and BTC, establishing EP/MgAlCe-LDH/BTC coating as a highly effective solution for advanced protection of ZAM steel.

The aim of this international journal is to analyse and publicise the progress and current state of knowledge in the field of organic coatings and related materials. The Editors and the Editorial Board members will solicit both review and research papers from academic and industrial scientists who are actively engaged in research and development or, in the case of review papers, have extensive experience in the subject to be reviewed. Unsolicited manuscripts will be accepted if they meet the journal''s requirements. The journal publishes papers dealing with such subjects as:
• Chemical, physical and technological properties of organic coatings and related materials
• Problems and methods of preparation, manufacture and application of these materials
• Performance, testing and analysis.
