Abstract

Introduction

The impact of diet on disease development is well established. Early intervention is crucial as food choices and dietary habits are established in childhood and adolescence. Epidaure Market is an online supermarket simulation designed for widespread use, particularly in educational settings to influence food choices. Schools provide a suitable context for preventive interventions, reaching at a low cost a large number of individuals while remaining mindful of health inequalities.

Objective

To develop an intervention aligned with school curricula addressing various aspects of sustainability of food choices, easily implementable by science teachers using the Epidaure Market game.

Method

The Evaluation Action Approach was employed, drawing on scientific literature and experiential knowledge to develop the intervention. Behavior change techniques were then used to operationalize theoretical variables.

Results

The Evaluation Action Approach identified and selected different variables (self-efficacy, attitudes, subjective norms, outcome expectations, knowledges and skills) to influence adolescents’ food motives related to sustainability. Each variable was targeted by two to four effective behavior change techniques. Three prevention sessions, tailored to school curricula, were developed around the virtual supermarket. These sessions are accessible online through an interactive platform.

Discussion

This intervention is inspired by behavior change theories derived from psychology and proposes a methodology for developing interventions grounded in scientific literature and experiential knowledge.
