Abstract

Context

Complexity of atopic trajectories, increased severity of atopic diseases and emergence of new therapies require expertise in atopy. Here, we would like to give feedbacks from a multidisciplinary consultation called “Severe atopy in children”, set up in the Hospices Civils de Lyon.

Methods

Retrospective reviews of patients’ charts were conducted.

Results

The consultation “Severe atopy in children” was conducted by pulmonologists, dermatologists, and immunologists with a training background of pediatricians and allergists. During this one-hour consultation, atopic conditions of various organs were evaluated and taken into consideration for specific, and if possible, global management, including the prescription of systemic treatments. In total, 48 children have accessed this consultation, all of whom are suffering from atopic dermatitis, with 68% having a severe form. Atopy comorbidity was found in 83% of patients, including 56% having IgE-mediated food allergy, 58% having asthma, and 60% having allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. A systemic treatment was prescribed to 62% of patients during the first consultation. Inhaled treatments were also optimized for asthmatics and the majority of food-allergic patients receiving oral immunotherapy in the follow-up.

Conclusion

The multidisciplinary consultation “Severe Atopy in Children” offers comprehensive care to children with atopic disorders and has the potential to become a cornerstone in the management of childhood atopy.
