Abstract
Extract
Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) encompasses two different conditions, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), which results from upper airway collapse during sleep, and central sleep apnoea (CSA), which is due to an altered ventilatory drive from the central nervous system [1, 2]. Both conditions stand out for interruptions of ventilation, lasting at least 10 s, that repeat all along sleep duration producing intermittent hypoxia (IH). IH and the induced hypoxic burden are the main stimuli involved in the cardiovascular pathophysiology of SDB [3, 4].

The European Respiratory Journal (ERJ) is the flagship journal of the European Respiratory Society. It has a current impact factor of 24.9. The journal covers various aspects of adult and paediatric respiratory medicine, including cell biology, epidemiology, immunology, oncology, pathophysiology, imaging, occupational medicine, intensive care, sleep medicine, and thoracic surgery. In addition to original research material, the ERJ publishes editorial commentaries, reviews, short research letters, and correspondence to the editor. The articles are published continuously and collected into 12 monthly issues in two volumes per year.
