Abstract
Rosa banksiae W. T. Aiton was described as a species from a double, white-flowering plant. The history of its transportation to Europe from Canton, China is reviewed and a neotype is designated for the name. The history and introduction of the single white flowered R. banksiae var. normalis Regel; double yellow flowered R. banksiae var. lutea Lindl. and single yellow flowered R. banksiae f. lutescens Voss. is fully documented. A lectotype is designated for R. banksiae var. lutea and neotypes designated for R. banksiae and R. banksiae f. lutescens.
