Abstract

The ultra-small nanoparticles, including quantum dots, gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) and carbon dots (CDs), have emerged as a promising class of fluorescent material because of their molecular like properties and widespread applications in sensing and imaging. However, the fluorescence properties of ultra-small gold nanoparticles (i.e., AuNCs) and CDs are more complicated and well distinguished from conventional quantum dots or organic dye molecules. In this frontiers, we highlight the recent development in the fundamental understanding of the fluorescence emission mechanism of these ultra-small nanoparticles. Moreover, this review carefully analyses the underlying principles of ultra-small nanoparticle sensors. We expected that this information on ultra-small nanoparticles can fuel the research aimed to achieve precise control over their fluorescence properties and the broadening of their applications.

Nanoscale Horizons stands out as a premier journal for publishing exceptionally high-quality and innovative nanoscience and nanotechnology. The emphasis lies on original research that introduces a new concept or a novel perspective (a conceptual advance), prioritizing this over reporting technological improvements. Nevertheless, outstanding articles showcasing truly groundbreaking developments, including record-breaking performance, may also find a place in the journal. Published work must be of substantial general interest to our broad and diverse readership across the nanoscience and nanotechnology community.
