Abstract
Introduction
Conclusion
Background
Social representations are everywhere in our current society and those about pain cannot escape. They impact our attitude and our behaviour. This study aims to understand physiotherapists social representations on chronic pain and how these may have an impact in rehabilitation?
Methods
A questionnaire was made for physiotherapists and divided in 3 parts: general information, ranked evocation, and questions about chronic pain and rehabilitation.
Results
Our results show that social representations of physiotherapists about chronic pain have negative connotation. The majority of physiotherapists think patient's profile, the psychosocial context and the patient's environment are also elements which can have a positive or negative influence in rehabilitation.
Conclusion
Negative connotations of these social representations may cause a difficulty in rehabilitation and can also prevent a therapeutic relationship. Positive elements like patient education, communication, and empathy enable to optimize treatment. Formal and continuing education as well as questioning of the practitioner may be also solutions to modify these social representations.
