Abstract

Objective. To determine the frequency and characteristics of hypoglycemia in term newborns attended in a hospital in northern Peru from January to September 2023; Material and methods. Descriptive observational design, quantitative approach. The population consisted of 21 neonates. Results. It was found that the most frequent maternal characteristics were: advanced maternal age (43%), 52% of the mothers had gestational diabetes, the most frequent BMI was obesity (43%), 57% of the mothers had delayed breastfeeding and 57% did not have controlled prenatal checkups. Likewise, 71% had a dystocic delivery. The most frequent neonatal characteristics in the study population were81% male, 43% were large for their gestational age, 62% did not present intrauterine delay, 90% did not present neonatal asphyxia and 76% did not present neonatal sepsis. Of the total number of neonates (1151) admitted to the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo during January-September 2023, only 21 (2%) developed neonatal hypoglycemia. Conclusion. It is concluded that among the most frequent maternal characteristics were gestational diabetes, advanced age and poorly controlled pregnant women, and a little more than half had dystocic delivery; and among the most frequent neonatal characteristics were male neonates and large for gestational age newborns. In addition, alow frequency of neonatal hypoglycemia was found in newborns born at term in the regional teaching hospital of Trujillo attended from January to September 2023.
