Self-injurious, stereotyped, and aggressive/destructive behaviors exhibited by individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders are called challenging behaviors (CBs). Severe CBs often require long-term treatment involving psychosocial approaches based on behavioral interventions and/or medication.
