Rapid maxillary expansion in early mixed dentition with a Haas expander: A critical review

Abstract

Rapid maxillary expansion is an orthodontic procedure that aims to increase the transverse width of the maxilla by opening the midpalatal suture; in addition, the treatment is commonly administered to widen the dental arch in cases of crowded maxillary anterior teeth.

This review focuses on the effect of the treatment performed specifically in the early mixed dentition by using a tissue-borne Haas expander anchored onto the deciduous teeth.

As with other expanders designs available in clinical practice, this protocol has been demonstrated to be effective in correcting posterior crossbite. In addition, it allows a reduction in maxillary anterior crowding when applied exactly during the eruption phase of the upper lateral incisors. Finally, the anchoring of the device limited to the deciduous dentition permits the removal of the first permanent molars and their periodontium from the risk of negative side effects.
