Abstract
: The Role of Acupuncture in Pediatric Patient with Overactive Bladder: Case Study. Over Active Bladder (OAB) in children is a lower urinary tract dysfunction with an estimated prevalence of 5-12% worldwide. Conservative management is less able to provide satisfactory results and medications for children are still limited and often cause adverse side effects. Various acupuncture modalities have been proven to improve OAB in adults, however, there are no studies for children yet. A 13-year-old girl was hospitalized with complaints of intermittent pain in both lower abdominal sides for the past 2 years and was bedwetting at least 5 times daily. Her OAB symptom score (OABSS) was 14 and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was 3. Her main diagnosis was wet OAB. Laser acupuncture was performed at LI4, ST36, SP6, and KI3 bilaterally. Acupuncture session was performed 3 times a week, with 6 sessions in total. After the third session, bedwetting had stopped, VAS was 1/10 and OABSS was 10. After the fifth session, VAS was 0/10. After the sixth session, she had no more pain and her OABSS was 6. In this case of OAB in one pediatric patient, laser acupuncture may provide good therapeutic results in relieving OAB symptoms and improving the patient’s quality of life.
