Abstract

In the following article, attention will be given primarily to the question of what role the target language plays as a language of communication in foreign language teaching (in this case of German) in the acquisition of communicative competence and how it can be promoted. In the research presented, I focus on the question in which language(s) the communication between teachers and learners takes place, depending on different teaching phases, situations and didactic goals. The research is based on the method of participant observation, and observations of online German lessons were carried out in selected classes at primary and secondary level.
