Transposable elements lead a peripatetic existence in which they must continually move to new sites to keep ahead of inactivating mutations at old sites and undergo exponential outbreaks when the production of new copies exceeds the rate of inactivation of old copies. Centromeres become populated by repeats that do little harm.
