Abstract

: Aplication of safe level of copper concentrations at short-and long-term durations for different larval stages, post-larvae, juveniles and adult stage of Macrobrachium rosenbergii are not well understood. Furthermore, the short-and long-term effects of copper toxicity on the physiological aspects, particularly oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion, effect on the growth and accumulation pattern in different tissues, biochemical composition and variations in enzyme activities are not recorded in details. Therefore, the following objectives were selected for the present study to fulfill the major lacunae existing in copper toxicity studies in M. rosenbergii including to assess (i) the tolerance limit of copper and evaluation of LC 50 at 48 and 96 hours duration through bioassay experiments in I st to XI th different larval stages, post-larvae, juveniles and adult stage of M. rosenbergii, (ii) toxicity impact of copper on water quality parameters, particularly salinity and alkalinity, (iii) the physiological stress conditions by assessing the oxygen consumption and ammonia N excretion rate in M. rosenbergii juveniles by exposing them in sub-lethal copper concentration for short-and long-term durations, (iv) the level of stress conditions by monitoring the changes occurring in the biochemical compositions and enzyme activities in gills, muscles and hepatopancreas, (v) the acute level of copper exposure on growth parameters and (vi) accumulation in selected tissues and their depuration period.
