There were doubts about the authorship at the time of the publication of the first short stories. In 1938, it was already known to everyone that Malba Tahan was the pseudonym of Mello e Souza. Therefore, we intend to work with two aspects. One focuses on how Mello e Souza has positioned himself as a fiction writer. The other consists of his activity as an educator and the reflections in his fictional production, especially in the work O homem que calculava. Abstract

Abstract This article aims to establish the parallels between the changes that occurred at the end of the 1920s concerning teaching mathematics in Brazil and the fictional production of Júlio Cézar de Mello e Souza (Malba Tahan).
