В настоящем выпуске публикуется перевод восемнадцатой книги «Этимологий» (гл. I–XV) Исидора Севильского (560–636). Труд Исидора, покоящийся в значительной мере на римской антикварно-грамматической и энциклопедической традиции, сам стал фундаментом средневекового энциклопедизма. В восемнадцатой книге автор рассматривает ряд важных для римского сознания сфер бытия, связанных с агональностью. Как и в других книгах, опираясь на свой «панграмматический метод», он рассматривает войну, судопроизводство и различного рода состязания через призму терминов, с ними связанных. В предисловии к переводу кратко изложены сведения о структуре книги и ее источниках. In this issue we publish the translation of the first part of the XVIII book Isidore of Seville’s “Etymologies”. This work is based appreciably on the Roman grammatical and encyclopedic tradition, and itself became the base of the medieval encyclopedism. In the eighteenth book the author considers some of the important spheres of the life for the Roman consciousness connected with сompetitiveness. As well as in other books, basing on his “pangrammatical method”, he results the Latin terminology connected with war, legal proceedings and a various sort of competitions. In the foreword to translation briefly discussed the structure of the book and its sources.
