Abstract

This article takes a closer look at self-referential devices found in the comics of non-academic Scott McCloud. The author of the article discusses the terminology and the state of research on self-referentiality, pointing out that the name [autotematyzm] functions only in Polish scholarly research. Next, the themes of self-referentiality in the comics are addressed. In the key part of the article, the scholar presents how self-referentiality manifests in Scott McCloud’s metacomics (Understanding Comics and Making Comics).
