Abstract

With the proliferation of the concept of the smart grid, the power system operates closer to its operational limits. This problem is exacerbated in a small scale power system, such as a microgrid, in which resources such as spare generation are limited. Therefore, it is important that control strategies are in place that ensure effective mitigation of disturbances in a timely manner. In this paper, a distributed control strategy is proposed that aims to damp the transients of a power system variable using local measurements. The proposed strategy adaptively temporarily adjusts the set point of a power system apparatus to design its trajectory. Depending on the availability of a model and prediction capability, the proposed strategy can be implemented as set point automatic adjustment (SPAA) or set point automatic adjustment with correction enabled (SPAACE). The performance of this strategy under several test scenarios is evaluated. It is seen that the proposed strategy is effective in mitigating oscillations.
